We always felt that Manchester United were on a hiding to nothing with their attempts to sign Sergio Ramos.

And the fact that he refused to make his reported desire to leave Real Madrid public should have been all the evidence that Manchester United needed to know that their desire to sign him would come to nought.

We think that Manchester United should have turned their attentions to Nicolas Otamendi a long time ago – he could be bedded in to the team already if they had – but it appears that he may still join the club this summer.

Latest reports suggest that Manchester United will now press on with a move for the rock solid South American international. The Express reports:

Man Utd to firm up interest in Nicolas Otamendi following Sergio Ramos snub

Manchester United are reportedly expected to lodge a bod for Nicolas Otamendi

Otamendi has only spent one season in Spain with Valencia – but what a season it was.

He hit 6 goals in 38 imperious appearances as he settled into Valencia like a duck to water. It’s a goal tally that many a top midfielder would be happy with and offers yet more evidence of the sort of impact that the lad can have at both ends of the park for Manchester United.

But the defending is his bread an butter and, to that end, he is a no nonsense, solid centre back with great strength and decent technique.

He was widely regarded as one of the best players in La Liga last season and that’s why he won’t come cheap.

But at 27 he can have a long-term career at Manchester United and we believe that the club should get this deal done as a matter of priority.

Let’s see the lad in a action.
