Manchester United keen to test rivals with a £40m bid

As usual we will do our best to separate the wheat from the chaff in the the transfer market this summer. And while there are always the shock deals that go ahead – RvP to Manchester United left us gobsmacked – most of it is pretty straightforward to assess and decant.

Who?

Harry Kane

Age?

21

Club?

Tottenham

Honours?

Became a full England international this season

Who Wants Him?

Manchester United

Says Who?

This time it’s the well-placed source, The Manchester Evening News, who reckon that Tottenham could be approached:

Kane signed a new five-and-a-half-year deal in February, but United executive vice chairman Ed Woodward is keen to test Spurs chairman Daniel Levy’s resolve with a bid of £40m.

How Much?

£40m

Is he worth it?

It’s not particularly easy to give a categoric answer to this. Based on one breakthrough season at Tottenham he is well worth the money and, at 21, he hopefully has a country decade of elite level football ahead of him.

But team tactics regularly get found out (see the man-marking of Marouane Fellaini towards the end of the last campaign) and players too. If Kane has a weakness it’s a lack of really explosive pace. This may prove to be the difference between him and the very top – that said, it didn’t hinder Alan Shearer, albeit at a time when pace wasn’t quite as important in the game. But Kane is potentially as good a finisher as the former England man.

Will he move?

He loves Tottenham and Tottenham love him. Even if he does eventually leave it surely won’t be for another couple of seasons.

Nonsense Rating?

8/10. We don’t doubt Manchester United’s interest but Spurs won’t sell. Simple as. Done and dusted. See you later. Trot on mate.

I don’t think Man Utd is going to sign anyone – it’s the usual pre season hype- we have had this for the last decade or so now.
