Manchester United are eight points behind Chelsea, who also have a game in hand, with less than ten games to go in the title race.
It would represent the shock of all shocks if United were to come back and win the title at this stage of the season. Even if they were to defeat Chelsea at Stamford Bridge in a few weeks time The Blues would retain an almost insurmountable lead over their great rivals.
But few teams can claim to be in more convincing form than Manchester United right now, and manager Louis van Gaal has sounded the battle cry by suggesting that his side still have an outside shot of winning the league.
In a video snippet of his weekly press conference, courtesy of The Daily Mail, Van Gaal says that his team still has a mathematical chance of winning the title and will keep plugging away.
If there were even five more games to run in this season then Chelsea boss Jose Mourinho may be feeling more uncomfortable about Manchester United’s current form.
But the main target for Louis van Gaal was always to get back into The Champions League spots this season and that possibility looks ever more likely after the results and performances of the last few weeks.
A successful end to the season, twinned with another good summer in the transfer market, and you have to assume that Manchester United will be right in the title rice come next spring.
