Surprise?

With many to most Manchester United fans hoping that the club will do away with their defensive problems by signing Mats Hummels this summer, any other alternative may be seen as a slight disappointment.

But latest reports suggest that Manchester United have a possible fall back option in the shape of Simon Kjaer. The Express reports:

MANCHESTER UNITED are lining up a £11million move to beat Liverpool and Tottenham to Lille defender SImon Kjaer, according to reports.

The Danish international, capped 48 times by his country, currently plays for Lille but has implied in the past that he may be open to a move in a thinly veiled statement which, on the surface, suggests that he wants to stay in France.

“I’ll only leave if a top club wants me, this season or next.

“Otherwise there is no reason to leave a club of Lille’s means.

“If I do leave, stability will be important. The clubs who want me will need to show that they intend to rely on me in the long term.

The report states that any move by Manchester United could make Kjaer the most expensive Danish player in history, a title currently held by the brilliant Christian Eriksen, who signed for Tottenham from Ajax in 2013.

Kjaer is a solid player who looks like a safe pair of hands and a decent all-rounder. But he doesn;t have the passion ability of Hummels – a crucial quality missing from the defence since Rio Ferdinand departed the club.

It’s not out of the question that both could be signed with question marks over the futures of Jonny Evans, Chris Smalling and Phil Jones. But we think that, of the three, only Evans will leave this summer.

Let’s see Kjaer in action. Manchester United fans: underwhelming or a canny signing?
