Mauricio Pochettino has kept his cards close to his chest with regards signings since joining Tottenham. We like the fact that he hasn’t felt the need to splurge straight away.
Hopefully, when he does make some big moves, they will be calculated and suitable acquisitions for the club.
One perennial problem area is in the middle of the defence where few would argue that Tottenham have a potentially long-term pairing to pick from right now.
Tottenham haven’t yet chosen the right partner for Jan Vertonghen but reports today are linking them with another centre back. The Mirror reports:
Tottenham are ready go back in for Austrian defender Kevin Wimmer in the summer
Wimmer, 22, was sounded out over a move from German club Cologne last week.
At 22 the 6ft 2in Wimmer already has decent experience. He’s played 35 times for Koln in the league since his debut in 2012. He’s also appeared 9 times for the Austria U21 side but is still awaiting his first full cap.
As you will see from his highlights, he’s a decent looking player with pace and good feet. But we could have said exactly the same thing about the last few centre backs that Tottenham have bought to the club.
Obviously it’s easy to just go out and buy a household name. It’s more difficult plucking a player form relative obscurity who can develop into a top player. This is a noble route which can save a club lots of money.
Still, we would be apprehensive about investing in another unknown capacity. If Spurs signed a high calibre star for the centre of their defence they could be set up for years.
Let’s see Wimmer in a action. Tottenham fans: another Chiriches?
