It’s the silliest day of silly season and the rumours will be flying around like never before.

The Sun reckons that Manchester United made a bid for the stupendous young Brazilian centre back Marquinhos on Sunday and that, unperturbed by the rejected offer, Louis van Gaal will press ahead with the signing today. Non-subscribers to their site can see the BBC report that:

Manchester United are still hoping to sign Marquinhos, 20, from Paris St-Germain, despite the French champions turning down a £35m (46.5m Euros) bid for the Brazilian defender on Sunday.

You have to imagine that this probably won’t happen. Manchester United fans know, only too well, that big business can be done on deadline day (Berbatov, Falcao and United’s best deal of all for Wayne Rooney).

But the noises coming out of Old Trafford seem to suggest that they are gearing up for a summer spree.

But Marquinhos is a wonderful player despite his tender age of just 20. He’s already made 4 appearances for Brazil and has become an important member of the PSG squad.

He’s got pace, the technique of a creative midfielder and can get a heavy challenge in when necessary. We keep speaking about Rio Ferdinand at the moment. But this is the sort of rare talent that Manchester United need – a player who can improve the overall defending of the team but also the distribution out of the back. Marquinhos has this skill set.

Let’s see him in action. Manchester United fans: perfect solution to the dodgy defence?
