Manchester United’s summer may be remembered for the protracted and painstaking pursuit of Arturo Vidal.

United are desperate for more quality in the engine room and, based on The Chilean’s performances at The World Cup, they don’t come much better.

But with the midfield looking threadbare Manchester United will need more than just Vidal. To challenge in England and Europe they will need four top quality central midfielders. Currently they have two – Carrick and Herrera. Carrick is pushing 33 and Herrera is obviously more of a creator.

As a box-to-box man Kevin Strootman is quickly becoming a world class talent and reports today suggest that he would already be a Manchester United man, had it not been for the serious injury sustained last season.

The Mail reports:

another Dutch international, Kevin Strootman, will arrive from Roma by January at the latest. He would already be at Old Trafford if not for a knee injury that forced him to miss the World Cup.

As we reported yesterday Daly Blind is also now being tipped for a move to United.

But Strootman looks as if he could be the midfield answer for Manchester United for up to a decade. He’s got a bit of everything – great technique, stamina, guts and a quality shot on him. He might be likened to Steven Gerrard in that he’s a box-to-box man who also scores goals.

Let’s see some highlights. Manchester United fans: no-brainer?

Can’t wait until January for Strootman to be the main midfield general, United need Vidal from the start of the season; but as long as the other positions are filled (1 or 2 c/bs, 2 full backs or utillity players and hopefully Reus) adding Strootman later would make United a real title contender instead of just top 4 hopefuls.

Sporting want far more than United are willing to pay for him though.
