Mauricio Pochettino backs Harry Kane to star in the Champions League

Harry Kane is used to having a slow start to the season.

Last year, it saw him dubbed a one-season wonder before he went on to win the Premier League Golden Boot, so it’s no wonder he wasn’t too worried this time around.

The England international failed to find the back of the net in Spurs’ first three games, but got on the scoresheet in the 4-0 win over Stoke to banish any demons that might have started to creep in.

Now, Mauricio Pochettino has backed the striker to shine in his first ever Champions League campaign.

“He is one of the best in the world , not (just) in Europe,” the Tottenham boss told the Mirror.

“To show his quality in the Champions League would be fantastic.

“It’s a very good challenge for him, to show that he can compete in different competitions and show his quality. I think it’s a big chance.”

Tottenham host Monaco at Wembley on Wednesday night, while CSKA Moscow and Bayer Leverkusen make up the rest of the group.

Kane arguably still needs to perform on a big stage like the Champions League after having such a shocking tournament for England at Euro 2016.

And given that the draw has been relatively kind to Spurs, this marks the perfect opportunity for the 23-year-old to prove himself.
