Eric Dier reacts to signing new Spurs deal

Eric Dier has become the latest Tottenham player to put pen to paper on a new contract.

The England international is facing some stiff competition for his place this season, with Moussa Sissoko, Mousa Dembele, and Victor Wanyama all vying for a spot in the heart of the midfield.

However, the 22-year-old has now been rewarded for his excellent two seasons at the club with an extension that will keep him at White Hart Lane until 2021.

Christian Eriksen last week signed a new deal, while Kyle Walker, Jan Vertonghen and Erik Lamela are also on the verge of improved contracts.

Dier has made 91 appearances for Tottenham so far, and could make his first ever appearance in the Champions League in Spurs colours on Wednesday night against Monaco.

Having initially come to the club as a defender, Mauricio Pochettino spotted something in the midfielder and moved him into the midfield, a position in which he has thrived.

Dier told the club’s official website:

“It’s been an unbelievable two years, from that first interview to now, the change has been amazing and I’m so happy to continue on this journey.

“I’m really looking forward to the future and that’s what makes it so easy to want to stay here – the fantastic manager we have, the great Club, the fans, all the infrastructure we have, the new stadium being built – it’s all really exciting and I want to grow with the Club at the same pace.”

“Having initially come to the club as a defender, Mauricio Pochettino spotted something in the midfielder”

Wrong, Dier was moved forward because injuries forced Pochettinos hand. Dier just happened to be versatile and very talented.
Dier may have been sold off if injuries hadn’t presented an opportunity based on the clubs treatment of other defensive recruits.
Like Redknapp with Bale, Pochettino playing Dier ‘out of position’ and the player coming good was more chance than judgement.
Let’s not credit managers when they had little to do with the players progression!
