Tottenham’s progress this season inevitably means they will be linked with anyone and everyone over the summer.
However, their transfer targets have just taken a turn for the bizarre, with The Telegraph reporting that the north Londoners are interested in signing Aston Villa’s Jack Grealish.
Right now, the relegated crisis club aren’t generally considered a scouting ground for Champions League talent, and if it’s true, this may be a sign that Mauricio Pochettino is taking his policy of picking up young English players a little too far.
Grealish looked like the next big thing a couple of seasons ago when he broke into Villa’s first team, but since then, his career has followed the same path as the club, as he now looks a shadow of his former self.
Admittedly, the 20-year-old has not been handled well at Villa Park.
The poisonous atmosphere pervading the Midlands side has clearly damaged his confidence, so a move to a club like Spurs could turn his fortunes around.
However, whether the Lilywhites want to take the risk remains to be seen.
Only last year, they took a fairly big punt on Dele Alli, signing him from League One club MK Dons, and that decision has been vindicated by the Englishman’s superb first season in the top flight.
Nonetheless, Grealish is yet to really prove himself at Villa. He has shown glimpses of what he can do on the wing, but in his role as an attacking midfielder, he has found the back of the net just once.
Stoke City and Everton are also rumoured to be interested in his signature, and either of those clubs are more his level until he shows otherwise.
