Jack Wilshere vs. Danny Drinkwater – who should’ve gone to Euro 2016?

The squads for Euro 2016 have been announced. Spain fretted over leaving Diego Costa at home. For France, it was Karim Benzema.

And all the while, England fans are incensed that Danny Drinkwater won’t be on the plane.

Drinkwater won a Premier League winners’ medal with Leicester City this season, making more tackles than any other player in the top flight.

Ordinarily, that should be enough to land him a spot in the England squad, but instead, manager Roy Hodgson has opted for Jack Wilshere.

Oddly, The Independent has it that Wilshere’s Arsenal team-mate Theo Walcott was overlooked because he hadn’t played enough, but his compatriot midfielder has made the cut despite featuring just twice for the Gunners.

Many will argue that Wilshere should not be anywhere near the England squad with his injury record, but the truth is that he offers that extra bit of quality that Drinkwater lacks.

Admittedly, the Leicester man is a solid midfielder, but he doesn’t have Wilshere’s finesse going forward. He also works well alongside Foxes’ team-mate N’Golo Kante, but the Three Lions do not have anyone like that to complement him.

Hodgson has often been accused of picking players on prestige, not form, but on this occasion, it could be justified.

Drinkwater may have created 44 chances last season, but Wilshere offers something unlike any other midfielder in the England dressing room, and that is what has set him apart.
