Zlatan Ibrahimovic’s move to Manchester United looked like a done deal for a while, but the transfer has hit quite a major stumbling block.
‘Ibra’ has, in fact, suggested he’d be interested in a return to Swedish side Malmo instead of a reunion with former boss Jose Mourinho at Old Trafford.
According to The Guardian, the forward said:
“I love Malmö and I wish I could play today.”
“I apologise for that, but I will, I will. Just wait for me.”
It’s difficult to tell how much weight should be given to these claims, with his agent seemingly intent on jangling Mourinho’s nerves, quite possibly to hike up his client’s price tag.
If it is true, though, and Ibrahimovic is to go back to his native country, United need to start looking elsewhere for a striker pretty soon.
A move to the Premier League would have given the maverick forward another chance to prove himself at the highest level.
He has, of course, spent time with AC Milan, Inter, Barcelona, Juventus, and Ajax.
However, with his most recent club Paris Saint-Germain, he has faced accusations that his prolific form has been down to a lack of quality in the French league.
The Premier League would present a new challenge, but it looks as though it may be one Ibrahimovic is shying away from.
After all, given Marcus Rashford’s impressive form for United this season, and the continuing presence of French sensation Anthony Martial in the first team, Ibrahimovic would not be guaranteed star status.
That may be something he has to contend with if he is to play for a top club again next season.
