Chelsea star to make United switch?

Nemanja

NEMANJA MATIC could be headed for Old Trafford if, as expected, Jose Mourinho is confirmed as the new manager of Manchester United.

That’s according to the Daily Mail, who also believe Mourinho is keen to have another crack at securing John Stones after failing to land the Everton defender while he was Chelsea boss.

The Daily Mail reports: “Jose Mourinho may raid his old club Chelsea as he looks to spend the £200million transfer kitty he will be handed by Manchester United this summer.

“Stones would cost about £45m, while an alternative might be Raphael Varane, whose fee would be £35m from Real Madrid. Chelsea would look for more than £25m if Mourinho tries to sign Matic.”

While Mourinho wasn’t in charge when Matic first joined Chelsea in 2009, it was the Portuguese who oversaw the Serbian international’s return to The Bridge in 2014.

The now 27-year-old went on to become one of the club’s key players as they were crowned Premier League champions that season.

Matic didn’t enjoy the best of campaigns this time around – something that could be said for a number of Blues – but he is still one of the best defensive midfielders in the world and would be an excellent signing for United.

Whether Chelsea would allow one of their better performers to join a potential title rival, however, remains to be seen – particularly after the backlash they faced last summer after selling Petr Cech to Arsenal.
