United hero could be back … for £80m

CR7

WE’VE heard this one before … Cristiano Ronaldo is set for a fairytale return to Manchester United.

It’s on in earnest this time, though, according to a number of sources, with The Sun suggesting the Real Madrid forward will make the switch to Old Trafford if United meet the Spanish giants’ asking price of £80million.

And the Daily Star believe the impending appointment of Jose Mourinho as United manager will be the spur for the deal.
They report: “The key man in the deal is super agent Jorge Mendes.

“Now he has star client Mourinho in position at United he can grease the wheel of business and make himself some serious cash.

“He is also Ronaldo’s agent and could make the deal happen as long as United want to go through with it.”

After joining United as a promising teenager in 2003, Ronaldo’s career took off and he enjoyed a glittering period at Old Trafford, winning numerous individual and team honours before joining Real Madrid for a then world-record fee of £80m.

It’s common knowledge Ronaldo and Mourinho didn’t enjoy the best of relationships during their time together at the Bernabeu and a recent excerpt from Guillem Balague’s new Ronaldo biography claims the two almost came to blows at one stage.

Nonetheless, the Portugal international clearly still has enormous respect for his compatriot, telling BT Sport last November: “I would put him at the top, I always say that. He’s a good coach, he did many good things and won many trophies for other clubs.”

It’s certainly not the first time in the last couple of years that there’s been talk of Ronaldo leaving Madrid – with former club United heavily linked.

But so far the rumours have always proved to be ill-founded so Red Devils fans would be well-advised not to get too excited.
