David Luiz could be set for a major drop down in January

The story of David Luiz’s return to Chelsea was supposed to be one of redemption.

The Brazilian wasn’t famed for his defending during his first stint at Stamford Bridge but went on to play a key role in Antonio Conte’s success last season as part of a back three.

However, since the Champions League defeat to Roma he has been under a cloud, allegedly having yawned through a tactics talk after the game.

In the following win over Manchester United, the centre-back was dropped and his future has been the subject of speculation ever since.

The Sun reported yesterday that the Blues were set to receive a bid of £25million from Arsenal, but they have now elaborated on that by suggesting that Newcastle are keen to take him on loan.

If he were to make the move to the north-east, it’s hard to envisage him returning to west London.

Magpies boss Rafa Benitez worked with the 30-year-old during his short stint at Chelsea.

The situation at Newcastle is still unclear because of takeover talks, which means Benitez may have to reconcile himself with only making loan signings in the New Year – he’s also eyeing Liverpool forward Danny Ings to address his side’s lack of firepower.
