Spurs favourites to sign BBS (Big Belgian Striker)

Laurent Depoitre

AFTER a long and so far unsuccessful attempt to convince West Brom to part with striker Saido Berahino, Tottenham have turned their attention to a couple of alternative options up front.

The Daily Mail claims Spurs remain favourites to sign Moussa Dembele.

The paper reported: “With the French U-20 international still only 19-years old, Fulham would receive a compensation fee for the striker who has scored 12 goals in 33 games this season.”

Meanwhile, the Mirror claims: “Tottenham have emerged as the favourites to sign Gent striker Laurent Depoitre and are preparing a move in the summer. A horde of Premier League clubs are interested in his signature, but Spurs’ brilliant spell this season, which should secure them a place in the Champions League, has turned the tide in their favour.

“Tottenham, West Ham, Crystal Palace, Leicester, Everton, West Brom and Southampton were all in attendance in Belgium recently to watch the player, who is expected to be available for a fee in the range of £12million.”

It’s no real surprise that Dembele is one of those targets, the Fulham forward having come close to making the switch to Tottenham in last month’s transfer window. The teenager has shown plenty of promise in the Championship this season but would be more an investment for the future rather than someone who would be ready to challenge regularly for a first team place from the off.

Belgium international Depoitre is a name not as familiar with English fans. At 6’3” and with a powerful build, the 27-year-old appears well suited to the physical demands of the Premier League and at around £12m would be available at less than half the fee West Brom are holding out for Berahino.

Depoitre is a relatively late bloomer, having only moved into top flight football in 2013 with Belgian side Oostende but he played a key part in Gent’s surprise qualification from the group stages of the Champions League this season.

He’s a different type of player to Berahino, more of a target man who holds the ball up and brings team-mates into play and is keen for a fresh challenge after turning down a new contract with Gent.

With Tottenham almost certain to be in the Champions League next season and still in need of some extra back-up for Harry Kane, we think Depoitre could be worth a punt at the price he’s available for.

Spurs fans, worth a look for £12m or would you rather have another crack at signing Berahino in the summer?
