It has been pointed out to us by various Tottenham fans recently that, with Eric Dier performing so admirably in the engine room right now, the need for another defensive midfielder is receding.

But we would counter that, if their current trajectory continues, Tottenham will need to start thinking like an elite club.

We have suggested that Mauricio Pochettino’s men are serious candidates for the title – they are still improving and gaining momentum with 14 games to go, with no one team having suggested that they are head and shoulders above the rest in this campaign.

If Spurs do achieve Champions League status come May they will need two top players for every position as the crucial fixtures pile up in the next campaign.

Which is why we think that Victor Wanyama would be such a good buy.

The Saints midfielder is said to be stalling on a new contract with speculation rife that other teams are interested. The Daily Mirror writes:

Victor Wanyama stalling on new Southampton deal amid Arsenal and Tottenham interest

The 24-year-old wants to wait until the end of the season. Last summer he submitted a transfer request after becoming aware of interest from Spurs

Wanyama is a good all-rounder. He has excellent technique, he picks a pass beautifully from deep, he has the obvious physical presence and will even get up the park to support attacks. We really like him and think that he could be a hit at Tottenham.

Let’s see some of his better moments.

Surs fans: worth a punt?
