Oh dear. Oh dear.
Did any of you see Barcelona destroy Valencia 7-0 in the Copa del Rey on Wednesday night?
It was a really horrible defeat for brothers Gary and Phil Neville who looked gobsmacked on the sidelines as Luis Suarez bagged four and Leo Messi hit a hat-trick against their sorry Valencia side.
After the game there were immediate calls from some Valencia fans for Neville to pack his bags and for the club to move on with #Nevilleveteya (Neville go now) trending on Twitter.
Obviously the Valencia fans couldn’t care less about Manchester United. But we wonder what sort of damage this might do to the prospects of Neville ever taking the reins at Old Trafford.
Just a few months ago, having become such an important member of the England set up and speaking so well as a pundit on TV, he looked like a Manchester United manager in-waiting.
And some onlookers felt that the Valencia job was the stepping stone to the hot-seat.
In truth, it was always going to be a big ask for an Englishman who didn’t speak the language to take his first job in Spain at a club which is desperately trying to rediscover former glories.
But things have arguably got worse since Neville took over and a 7-0 defeat is always going to leave the wider public asking serious questions about the suitability of the manager to the club.
If there was any temptation, on the part of the Manchester United board, to take a gamble on Neville then that will surely have receded with Neville’s stint in Spain.
The Manchester United legend has intimated that his future doesn’t lie in management anyway. And if he did manage in England he would probably now have to make his way up the ladder, proving himself at a smaller club before having any designs on United.
