Manchester United fans’ disappointment level may have gone up a notch yesterday with the news that Pep Guardiola will become the new boss of fierce rivals Manchester City.

It leaves some wondering what the future holds for the red half of Manchester.

One tabloid suggests that Manchester United made a last minute dash to snare the superb manager before he agreed the City deal.

The Daily Star reports:

Man United and Chelsea both made last-ditch attempts to snatch Pep Guardiola from Man City

PEP GUARDIOLA snubbed last-minute attempts from Manchester United and Chelsea to hijack his move to Manchester City.

But there are also some reports which suggest that Manchester United weren’t interested in Pep. This may feel to some onlookers like a proud way of distancing themselves from a deal which they lost out on.

But Sky Sports started:

Manchester United made no attempt to hijack Pep Guardiola’s move to Manchester City, according to Sky sources.

soccersweep says: we feel that Manchester United would have brought Pep to the club next season if he had wanted to come. But would he have been the right choice?

Guardiola loves possession-based football and United fans have just witnessed 18 months of it, with no great reward or excitement.

There is no guarantee that this style will work with such well-drilled, quick and physical defences in The Premier League these days.

Sir Alex was never that fussed with possession either – more on what you do with the ball when you DO have it. He loved the counter-attacking style which almost required the opponent to have the ball at times.

And Jose Mourinho’s style is much more aligned to this too.

It feels that there is now an ever more compelling argument for Mourinho to take the reigns at United. And he would doubtless be excited by the prospect.
