Manchester United: Would Gill and Ferguson be the perfect combination in the short-term?

Crucial times

Manchester United director David Gill expressed his disappointment last week about the status quo at the club.

“Clearly we all hope the results would be better and we are all disappointed with that. Undoubtedly it has been a season of underachievement given the investment that was made in the summer.”

We get the genuine feeling that Gill adores Manchester United and there must be a temptation, on his part, to step into the breach and use his experience to guide the ship in these most turbulent of times.

Increasingly our readers are turning against the current incumbents of the top posts at the club.

It’s hard for some to understand why Louis van Gaal is still at the helm when he’s clearly lost the faith of many fans and possibly the players – his squad certainly isn’t achieving at the moment.

We think that the performance levels of both he and Ed Woodward should be seriously assessed by the board, in the interests of the ailing giant.

There have been some fairly wild rumours floating around that Fergie could step back in to help, short-term, if LvG is sacked sooner rather than later.

And how Manchester United could use that classic Gill-Fergie combination in the last third of the season.

Gill could steady the ship and tee up some quality transfers while Fergie could install confidence, clarity and pride in the Manchester United squad once more.

In reality, the physical demands of managing Manchester United even for a couple of months would put a great strain on the 74-year-old.

But if he could mastermind things from the directors box, with a live link to Ryan Giggs in the technical area, we might be in business.

For our money, Jose Mourinho is by far the best choice for Manchester United right now. That he hasn’t been brought in yet bodes badly for his prospects as next United coach.

If United don’t want Mourinho and they lose to Stoke tonight then the fans would surely love to see Sir Alex take the reins for one last glorious stint until the summer.

I truly support the Gill and Sir Alex partnership because Ed Woodward don’t seem to understand Football but the business part of it. Ed Woodward messed up moyes and now Lvg. The squad needs reshuffling but he end up purchasing average players, that was why Guadiola chose City over Utd. Every transfer window we talk of marquee signing, none would want to come and struggle with this average players. Please sir Alex and Gill come and help us before Utd becomes another AC Midlands, let’s borrow a leave from Madrid how to manage and sustain a big club
