Better than RvP in the penalty area: Why Manchester United can’t afford not to pay big money for this man in January

Uruguay 4-3 victory on penalties to Netherlands to win Copa Conf

Wonderful player

When RvP first joined Manchester United, it was like the whole squad received a masterclass in finishing. United housed a decent complement of strikers already but RvP took the marksmanship to another level.

He wasn’t necessarily involved in too much of the nitty gritty of many matches and could regularly go missing for big swathes of the games. But, when it mattered, he was in the right place at the right time and his name would, more often than not, end up on the scoresheet.

Manchester United weren’t great that season but that ruthless finishing that they acquired with RvP settled the title.

And, with the title still up for grabs this season, we wonder what sort of an impact Edinson Cavani could have on the race.

He’s been strongly linked with Manchester United this week and we do know that all is not well at PSG for the player.

Manchester United haven’t created as much as in many a bygone season. But they have still been regularly profligate in front of goal.

A perfect example came against Newcastle – a match which United should have won comfortably – but Lingard and Fellaini missed absolute sitters.

It’s been a symptom of Manchester United’s season.

But Cavani would change all that. He would finish more chances and also allow Wayne Rooney to pull the strings from the deeper role which we think he suits best.

There is a whiff of indecision at Old Trafford right now. Perhaps Manchester United want to wait until the summer and give the keys to the warchest to a new manager.

But, why wait? The addition of Cavani could still catapult Manchester United to an improbable title.

Let’s see all of his 31 goals from last year.
