We really hope that Manchester United don’t mess this one up.

Based on statistics, it’s extremely hard to sign a top player in January as most clubs want to hold on to their prized assets.

So the potential availability of Edinson Cavani should come as music to ears of Louis van Gaal and Ed Woodward.

ESPN reports today that Manchester United are considering a bid and that the player wants the move:

Manchester United are contemplating an official bid for Paris Saint-Germain’s Edinson Cavani, sources have told ESPN FC, with the Uruguayan striker extremely keen on a move to Old Trafford.

We can easily imagine United over-complicating the thought process on this one. But what is there really to consider? Manchester United need another top striker and there is one reportedly desperate to join the club – in January!

Wayne Rooney is indeed scoring goals again at number 9 and wingers may be seen as the priority in terms of acquisitions.

But this is a team which has scored 28 goals in 22 games in The Premier League this season – less than Romelu Lukaku and Jamie Vardy combined.

Manchester United need more goals and Cavani is the closest thing to a guarantee of them.

He’s scored 223 in 405 games and, at 28, he is at the top of his game. Even in this unsettled season for the player he has hit 13 in 24.

PSG boss Laurent Blanc said this month:

‘There is a problem with Cavani’s behaviour but my job is to think of the entire squad as a collective,’ said Blanc.

‘I believe that he can score here but I understand if he wants to consider other career opportunities.’

Manchester United simply have to get this one over the line before another club does.
