Fresh Link: Odds shorten on prolific star to join Everton in this window

Very good quality

Far be it for us to question the transfer policy of Roberto Martinez. But we would have liked to see the boss make a serious attempt to sign Xherdan Shaqiri from Inter.

Now that the Swiss looks set for a Stoke Everton will look at other options and the Everton manager may be about to make a move for Charlie Austin, if the bookies are to be believed.

Sky Sports reports Tuesday afternoon:

AUSTIN CUT FOR EVERTON MOVE

Sky Bet have cut Charlie Austin to 2/1 from 5/2 to join Everton this Transfer Window following support this morning.

The report does still state that Tottenham are favourites to sign the lad. And while Austin would be a great asset to many a club, we wonder whether he would represent the best use of money for Everton this summer. Because unless they offload Romelu Lukaku then it’s difficult to see them both playing in the same team.

Lukaku has of course played in a wider role in the front three. But he is surely a number 9 through and through. Austin would struggle to play at any other position than number 9 so this may be a matter of strengthening the squad rather than the team.

As for Austin, he has many qualities.

Like Harry Kane, he usually hits the target and makes the keeper work.

He is really strong and holds up the ball well and he will give everything when he’s on the pitch.

Austin was sensational for QPR last season

Austin was sensational for QPR last season

He’s been prolific in his club career with 216 goals in 350 games in his club career – albeit much of which has been spent in the lower leagues.

But he’s not the paciest player and we would like to see Everton bring in a player who can score goals but also create for others.

Nevertheless, if Roberto Martinez wants three more signings this summer then Austin would be a decent part of that equation.

Let’s see him in a action.

Everton fans: does Charlie Austin boil you potatoes?
