Big Day

Manchester United XI: Romero; Darmian, Smalling, Blind, Shaw; Carrick, Memphis, Schneiderlin; Mata, Rooney, Young.

Tottenham XI: Vorm, Walker, Alderweireld, Vertonghen, Davies, Bentaleb, Dier, Chadli, Eriksen, Dembele, Kane.

So, after eleven weeks of hiatus the season is back, to the immeasurable joy of millions.

It hasn’t been the most straightforward or ideal run up to the new season for Manchester United manager Louis van Gaal, who has had to deal with constant speculation with regards the future of David de Gea.

The Spaniard has clearly had his head turned by the interest from Real Madrid and LvG has chosen not to use him for this game.

But Manchester United look in good health in general with hardly any of the injuries which pock-marked the start to last season for the club.

As for Tottenham, it’s been a fairly quiet summer so far in terms of acquisitions, with much of the transfer business surrounding departures.

But Tottenham have made some notable and much needed additions to their defence with Toby Alderweireld, in particular, set to be one of the singings of the summer.

So it should be another open match – hopefully with the same sort of goal count as the average of 4 per game that this fixture has generated in recent seasons.
