Great opener

Another explosive press conference from the Manchester United manager where he was honest enough to give us some clues about the line up against Tottenham, but still kept his cards close to his chest.

What we do know is that, barring a huge surprise, Sergio Romero will make his first start for Manchester United on Saturday’s first game of the season (Kick Off 12:45 local time).

Louis van Gaal confirmed that, with all the speculation surrounding his future, David de Gea would not be considered for selection against Spurs.

Anders Lindegaard has had a muscular injury but could be ready for Saturday.

However, it is surely more likely that the Argentina international will get the gloves in a huge debut for the 28 year old.

Of the outfield players we saw much of Manchester United’s likely first eleven on tour as LvG made consistent selection decisions in order to get his team playing together as much as possible.

We think that Chris Smalling will get the nod alongside Daley Blind in the centre of defence, after Phil Jones had some patchy performances in America.

And LvG also suggested that new signing Bastian Schweinsteiger isn’t yet fit enough to play 90 minutes.

So we think that Carrick and Schneiderlin will form an impressive pairing in the engine room for the opener.

We would love to see Depay’s pace deployed out wide but think that LvG will probably continue with him in the No10 role.

So here is how we think Manchester United will line up at Old Trafford on Saturday lunchtime.

We still hold out hope that Basti will start but he may eased in over time to safeguard his fitness.
