We find it strange that there is any debate about the overall quality of Christian Benteke. At 24 he hasn’t yet played for an elite club but that won’t be the case for too much longer, if the intense media speculation about his future is anything to go by.
The argument amongst some detractors is that he may lack the finesse and technical ability to affect the biggest games.
We have no such concerns and even a club like Manchester United, which frequents the very top end of the market, should be interested in taking this lad. Indeed, The Daily Mail reckons that United are now keen. They say:
Manchester United eye up move to trump Liverpool for £32.5million Christian Benteke
But Villa boss Tim Sherwood is in no mood to deal even if the release clause is met:
‘You can take your £32.5m but try and spend it. It’s a tough market out there. Other chairmen would be happy wouldn’t they? If Christian was to go the prices go up, clubs would hold us to ransom.
And Sky Sports reported this afternoon that:
Sky Bet are reporting a surge of interest in Manchester United signing Christian Benteke this summer, prompting their odds to be slashed from 7/1 to 2/1.
With a general paucity of available strikers in Europe right now we think that £32.5m for a 24 year old who has scored 49 in 100 games for a struggling Premier League side is money very well spent.
It’s not just his technique and shooting ability. This guy stands at 6ft 3in and has many of the same physical qualities as Didier Drogba. He will leave many a top defence in tatters and he could feasibly be the top scorer in The Premier League with an elite club.
Whether or not Manchester United do make a move for this lad we have no reservations about his quality and think that the ultimate buyers will be getting a great talent.
Let’s see him in action. United fans: is Benteke good enough for the first team?
