The Reason why Memphis Depay still doesn’t have a shirt number at Manchester United?

Memphis will ruin defenders

Worry

It must be a tad annoying for the player himself that Memphis still doesn’t have a shirt number at Manchester United. The youngster must be dreaming of his debut and scoring goals for the club but his visions won’t yet include a shirt number on his back.

The reason, of course, is that the squad reshuffle is still far from complete.

More specifically, and rather worryingly for many, the future of Manchester United’s number 7, Angel di Maria, has become the subject of increasing doubt.

If Di Maria was certain to stay then surely Memphis would be given a higher squad number – 15, 19 and several numbers in the twenties are currently free.

But Louis van Gaal is perhaps waiting to give this match-winner a number which reflects his status in the new Manchester United. And he certainly has the confidence to take the hallowed number 7 if Di Maria does depart.

We would love to see The Argentine continue his career at Manchester United.

We haven’t seen anything like his best and, even if he never again scales the heights of his last season at Real Madrid, he remains the sort of lightning quick wide provider which Manchester United are short on.

The ideal scenario for us is Di Maria at 7, Rooney at 10 and Depay at number 9.

That front line would be bewitching and allow the superb finishing of Wayne Rooney to come to the fore in an uncluttered attacking triumvirate.

Sadly, there remains a genuine concern that Angel di Maria will start next season at PSG. This would surely promote Memphis to number 7.

Every cloud has a silver lining and Memphis would probably do the shirt justice. But it would still represent a slightly disappointing outcome, if it were to pass.
