New Link: Manchester United want another top Number 10 – report

Manchester United are clearly casting their net far and wide this summer in their latest recruitment drive for top talent from around the world.

The carousel of usual suspects have come and gone from the sports media pages but here’s a new one for you. Manchester United have been linked, in the latest news cycle, to the transfer of Mario Gotze from Bayern Munchen.

The Metro reckons:

Manchester United have reportedly held talks with Bayern Munich over the futures of Mario Gotze, Bastian Schweinsteiger and Angel Di Maria.

There is no doubt that Gotze, who scored the decisive goal for Germany in The World Cup, is a top player. But this story doesn’t stack up for various reasons.

Firstly, Goetze is very much a number ten. Louis van Gaal complained when he got to the club that:

“The problem I have at United is that the selection is not balanced. There are five number nines and six number 10s – and we don’t have enough defenders.”

So we aren’t sure that he would offload a winger for another number 10. Furthermore, Louis’s preferred 4-3-3 doesn’t always allow for such a player.

And with Di Maria himself, we would be surprised if Manchester United let him go. Despite him having a roller coaster first season in England, he is exactly the sort of pacy player that Manchester United need more of in their side.

As for Schweinsteiger, he’s decent player but not one to really catch the imagination of the Manchester United faithful.

So I think we will stick rather than twist on these rumours. Let’s see Gotze in action all the same.
