Manchester United Transfers: Darmian, Otamendi and the marquee signing

Darmian: Quick

Update

So, finally we are starting to see Manchester United’s summer transfer plans take shape.

From our point of view, we think that the most likely signings for Manchester United at this point are:

Matteo Darmian

A fee may have been agreed for the player and he could even join up with squad before it goes off to America.

Nicolas Otamendi

There has been a huge amount of speculation about Sergio Ramos to Manchester United but we think this would be a better signing. At this point it feels more feasible that the Argentine will join the club this summer.

Morgan Schneiderlin

It is surely only a matter of time before this deal is completed. Lots of reports suggesting a move is imminent.

A goalkeeper?

Manchester United’s decision to buy a goalkeeper will of course rest upon the future of David de Gea.

The Marquee Signing?

Manchester United will be sniffing around for the marquee signing as the icing on the cake for the new season.

Based on what we know so far out here is how we think Manchester United could line up at start of next season. But we still think that another A-lister will be on his way to Old Trafford before September.

I hope and pray you are wrong to include Dumbo Di Maria. With a bit of luck he’ll be gone by then.

United will be playing 4-3-3, not 4-5-1 with two defensive midfielders. They’re more likely to line up with Keeper: Valdes, Defence: Shaw Otamendi Smalling Darmian Midfield: Young Carrick Herrera Forwards: Di Maria Roonster Memphis.

With that line-up don’t worry about the starting positions of Young, Herrera, Di Maria and Memphis. Van Gaal’s slightly altered version of Total Football involves the defensive midfielder (Carrick) and the central striker (the Roonster) retaining their positions at all times and those other 4 players continually switching roles and positions and even flanks. It’s this movement that completely destroyed Spurs, Liverpool and City. Once we get Schneiderlin to cover for Carrick when he’s out of action we’ll be playing the way we did against those 3 clubs all season.

Apart from Fellaini and Mata United should have one of the quickest first teams in the league next season. I’d like to see Van Gaal having the depth to drop Young, Fellaini, Jones, Blind and Valencia from the starting line up, but once you get past the starting eleven the back up is pretty thin throughout the squad compared to the Chelsea and City squads. Arsenal have been over reliant on Wenger’s ability to unearth and develop the potential in under the radar players but with the purse strings finally untied and a very strong squad Arsenal are now undeniably another very serious title challenger. If United are to keep up with and even overtake the top three before the end of Van Gaal’s contract he will need to bring in at least another half a dozen top quality players.

    Valdes
    Shaw
    Rojo
    Otamendi
    Darmian
    Schneiderlin
    di Maria
    Herrera
    Rooney
    Mata
    Memphis

Now look at the 2nd 11

    GK Lindegaard
    LB Blind
    LCB Jones/McNair
    RCB Smalling
    RB Valencia
    DM Carrick
    CM Fellaini
    LCM Young
    RCM Peirera
    CAM Powell
    CF Wilson

Obviously you can’t have two teams of world class players in your 25 man squad and unless there was a particularly nasty virus that hit the entire first team its unlikely but were Van Gaal forced to put that team out it would struggle in defence, be chronically slow in midfield, lack power up front and be woefully short of goals.

    There have been a dizzying number of players moved on in the last 2 years;
Ben Amos, Callum Evans, Tom Thorpe, Ryan McConnell and Saidy Janko were all culled from the U21s. Nani, Henriquez and Cleverley have left with Rafael, Evans, Hernandez, RVP and perhaps Nick Powel about to follow them out of the door. Blackett, Lingard and Januzaj will probably be loaned out following Will Keane’s move to PNE.

Tbh I’ve lost track of all the players United have either lost through retirements and sales since SAF was moved upstairs. I have serious doubts about Van Gaal’s overal plan and his individual judgements; it hasn’t all been bad but along with the admirable way that he stopped the rot and is finally cleared the dead wood he has also made some savage, risky, naive, obtuse and strange decisions. Imho the task will prove to be too big to complete in 3 years. Willl the Glazers trust Van Gaal with another contract and even more transfer funds if United fall short, and even if they did, would he really want that pressure at a time when most people are retiring?
Giggs was a great player but will he have what it takes to run one of the biggest clubs in world football and attract, coach and manage the top players to the club? I don’t believe so, even with another two years under Van Gaal. The Dutch man was brought in to do a specific job, the next appointment will be as important for United’s long term future as Van Gaal will have been in halting what could well have been a long term decline. It should be a younger man on a 5 year deal, but not Giggs, not yet.
