Get a load of this. More for the comedy value than anything, we wrote a piece last week about how the enigmatic winger Nicolas Gaitan has once again been linked with a move to Manchester United.
A good four years after he was first mooted as a transfer target for United, his name popped up again. It didn’t really make much sense because Gaitan would surely have been a downgrade on fellow left winger, and Manchester United star, Angel di Maria anyway.
But, even more comically, the player himself has once more quashed rumours of a move to Atletico Madrid and Manchester United by saying:
“I have a contract with Benfica and will continue at Benfica, for sure.”
Where do these rumours come from? We maintain that most rumours, however crazy sounding, usually have a strand of substance. Even if the deal doesn’t go through, a rumour generally means that there has been an enquiry of some description. But there is no logic in Manchester United buying Gaitan unless they want a worse left winger than what they currently have.
With Memphis Depay joining the club and Ashley Young likely to get a new contract, this rumour should have gone straight in the bin before it got out.
It just goes to remind us all that silly season is upon us. Thank gosh you have soccersweep here to decant the truth! But expect ‘Gaitan to Manchester United’ to surface again at some point in the future…
