We really hope that Tottenham can get this one over the line. With the player linked to several Premier League clubs of late it won’t be easy but Spurs do now appear to be in the box seat where it comes to the signature of Toby Alderweireld. The Daily Mail reports:
Chairman Daniel Levy is to fly out to Madrid later this week to start negotiations for the 26-year-old defender although Southampton also retain a slim hope of signing the Belgian.
The report suggests that Atletico want £10m for the player. But we think that Tottenham shouldn’t bother bartering. Because this signing can make a huge difference to their chances of getting into the top four and winning a trophy next season.
Spurs scored a decent amount of Premier League goals in 2014/15 – they were the fifth highest scorers with 58. But the biggest problem was in defence where they conceded 53. Only 4 teams conceded more and even relegated Hull and Burnley only conceded 51 and 53 respectively.
Tottenham have been fumbling around for years for a successful formula at the back – they have one half of the central defence sorted with Jan Vertonghen. But fellow Belgian Alderweireld would make them an altogether more watertight prospect next season. We think he should be an absolute priority for the club.
Let’s see him in action. Tottenham fans; a must buy?
