A story which began, as what seemed like little more than idle banter, has gathered pace like a steam train and shows no sign of stopping any time soon.
Latest reports in the Spanish media outlet Marca suggests that a bid has been made by Manchester United for want away Real Madrid star Sergio Ramos. While that bid was turned down, we now very much expect another one to come in imminently – Manchester United appear to have the bit between their teeth on this one.
United table 45m bid for Ramos
We have maintained, since this story broke, that it’s not the most imaginative or brilliant piece of business from Manchester United. More than ever, they seem to be trying to buy their way to short-term success with no real plan in place for the longer term.
Perhaps Louis van Gaal sees players like Phil Jones, Paddy McNair and Tyler Blackett as nailed on first teamers of the future but doesn’t believe that they are quite ready for the title chase on their own and need a mentor. With 128 caps for Spain and a decade at Real Madrid they have a decent one in Ramos.
But the size of the deal, for a player who will be 30 in the coming season, seems a bit too much for us. And Manchester United haven’t even had a bid accepted yet so the price could get even more crazy before a deal is struck.
We would take Raphael Varane any day…
