While Real Madrid keep buying superb Manchester United players on an upward trajectory, the same can’t be said about the Old Trafford club.
The jury is still out on the hugely expensive Angel di Maria and, if Manchester United sign Sergio Ramos, they will be exacerbating the chasm of inequality in the clubs’ business with one another.
We have maintained from the off that, whether or not Ramos wants to leave Madrid, he would be a very poor investment for Manchester United. He may offer a couple of good seasons – a title win even – but he would be unlikely to have any sell on value and may only guarantee one or two good seasons before he lost his pace and desire to play in the less glamorous surrounds of Manchester.
Here are five, immeasurably better signings for the Manchester United defence.
Aymeric Laporte
He has just signed a new contract with a release clause of 50m Euros. But we aren’t opposed to Manchester United spending massive amounts on good investments. Laporte is a super defender and, at just 20, his fee would be offset by his longevity – we could be talking about another Rio Ferdinand.
Nicolas Otamendi
Strong, athletic and no nonsense. He may not have the wow factor of Ramos but nor would he be a sending off waiting to happen. And, at 27, Manchester United could expect 5 top years out of him, alongside Marcos Rojo in a watertight defence.
Ron Vlaar
Some subscribe to the idea that United already have good enough centre backs. Ron Vlaar might add a safe pair of hands while the others complete finishing school.
Raphael Varane
We love this guy. If Manchester United want a Real Madrid player they should be going for Varane, Ronaldo and Bale. Not Ramos.
John Stones
Another who has a sparkling career ahead of him and would justify the high fee because of his age.
