Manchester United could sign ‘very strong character’ according to insider

Nonsense

When Angel di Maria was linked to Manchester United for £60m we made it very clear that we thought it was a terrible use of the club kitty. Di Maria had that great virtue of pace but didn’t always use it in the best way. His football brain arguably wasn’t as impressive as his physical attributes.

We hope that he comes good next season but, in retrospect, would you have signed him for Manchester United, given the choice?

And, for different reasons, we feel that the signing of Sergio Ramos would represent a backward step for Manchester United. Just so you know exactly where we are, we think it’s a terrible idea.

While Real Madrid have targetted a world class player coming into his prime (David de Gea) Manchester United consider parting with way over half of the Ronaldo cash to buy a defender who is going to be 30 in March!

United’s last big veteran signing was RvP who had one good season at the club. Now he looks knackered. We envisage a very similar trajectory for Ramos. Though the short term gain would be obvious, United would be left with a thirty something with no sell on value and massive wages, in a couple of years. What’s the point of that?

But Ramon Calderon, the former Real Madrid president, reckons that Manchester United would be getting a great deal if the lad signed. He told Talksport:

“Sergio Ramos is an icon for the fans of Real Madrid. He is leader on and off the field. I don’t know if he is the best centre-back in the world but no doubt he is one of the best.

“He can play as a right-back, a midfielder and he was a striker at the beginning of his career. He is also a very strong character.

“If Sergio goes to Man United, they will be very lucky.”

For our money the best clubs buy players who are coming into their prime rather than moving out of it. Look at Barcelona and Real Madrid themselves. If Ramos played for, say, Chelsea would either of them pay £46.5m for the 29 year old? They may have boundless cash but they aren’t stupid.

Manchester United fans: is Ramos really a good idea?

Comment: Sergio is not the best for man u at the moment, considering his age & the no of red cards to his name… I think Otamendi is the best answer.
