Manchester United have signed Memphis Depay but are yet to really get their hands dirty on their major summer transfer business. And such is the professionalism of United manager Louis van Gaal that we have all really been left guessing about exactly who he wants this summer.
But he’s arguably after another centre back and, to that end, one player has dropped a big hint that he us leaving his club this summer.
Nicolas Otamendi is currently at The Copa America with Argentina and he has spoken about his future in ambivalent terms:
‘I’ve spoken with my agent and Valencia know what I want,’ admitted Otamendi.
‘I spoke to the President and my agent and they know my desires very well, but for now I’ve told my agent that my head is [with Argentina] and left him to it.
‘Right now, I’m enjoying each day alongside [Angel] Di Maria, [Marcos] Rojo, [Carlos] Tevez, [Lionel] Messi and the other players who are leaders here.’
The 27 year old has played 21 times for Argentina. He’s something of a late developer but has been nailing down a place in the heart of the defence for his international team alongside Marcos Rojo. At club level, he’s only been at Valencia for a year but has scored an excellent 6 goals in 38 appearances in the defence.

As you would expect from an Argentinian defender, he’s tough, no nonsense and also has decent technique. While a few Manchester United signings from South America – Veron, Di Maria and Anderson – have struggled, Argentinians have generally proven themselves to be good travellers and well suited to The Premier League.
We think that if Manchester Untied do manage to sign him it would be a solid acquisition for a back line which struggled badly at times before recovering well towards the end of last season.
