Manchester United could simply outbid their rivals for 20 year old superstar

Impossible task

How much do Manchester United want Raheem Sterling? At the end of last month, and earlier this, most of the back pages were replete with news about United’s interest in the unsettled England star.

Since then Manchester City have made their move, but the latest reports suggest that City could go cold having reached their limit on valuation:

Manchester City are growing increasingly impatient in their pursuit of Raheem Sterling and are ready to focus their attentions on nailing other targets.

Liverpool are likely to reject City’s latest offer of £35million which includes an additional £5m in trophy-related add-ons.
City are understood to be reluctant to increase their offer, though could make one last bid to the tune of £40m straight cash with reduced add-ons – the maximum amount they are willing to pay for Sterling.

The assumption with regards Manchester United, is that their fiercest of rivals won’t sell to Old Trafford. But what if Manchester United offered more money? A lot more money. If the best bid for the player stands at around £40m and Manchester United offered, say, £55m then would the Anfield giants have to reconsider? There must be a point at which they would have to relent.

Because they say that pride comes before a fall and it wouldn’t make sense to accept a much smaller offer for a player if a substantial amount more was on the table from a rival of similar threat. With £15m Brendan Rodgers might be able to buy another Coutinho or Sturridge.

So the most important question for us is how much do Manchester United actually want the lad? At 20 years of age that transfer fee would be stretched over the dozen or so years that he would give to the club. If he wanted to move again then most, if not all of the fee could be recouped.

So perhaps it’s a question of how highly Louis rates the lad. And if he sees Sterling as a priority then perhaps it’s not such an impossible transfer after all.

Manchester United fans: Is he worth as much as £55m?
