Has there ever been a club quite like Real Madrid? At the turn of the year it looked as if Carlo Ancelotti would be asked to stay and coach the club indefinitely. His calm and composed outlook, twinned with apparent tactical genius had Real Madrid on a near record winning run and playing unbelievable football.
But the subsequent drop in standards, and Ancelotti’s ostensible lack of power in turning things around, has now made him a favourite to leave the club this summer.
We think that it would be mistake to let Ancelotti go as he seems perfect for the demands of the job. But Real Madrid may well let him go and British media outlet, The Daily Mail, reckons that he could be replaced by a surprise candidate.
Rafa Benitez in running to replace Carlo Ancelotti at Real Madrid as La Liga giants aim to cut ties with Italian tactician
Rafael Benitez fits the bill in many ways. He’s a passionate Spaniard and has huge experience in the top leagues of Europe. Many fans of Liverpool, one of his ex-clubs, still want him back three managers and several years later.
We think that he would be decent choice but whether he would be a marked improvement on Ancelotti is highly debatable. That said, Real Madrid like to freshen things up regularly in the coaching department and Rafa may just click with the players and employ a style of play which is popular with the fans. It seems very likely that he would be interested in the highest profile job in football.
