Not Smalling: Manchester United’s best player vs Burnley

In a season which is turning out to be another damp squib, most of Manchester United’s stars seem to have become infected by mediocrity.

Take Angel di Maria. He arguably came from a marginally less competitive league to join Manchester United. But, after a good 6 months in the team, you would have thought that a player bought for £60m would be good enough to destroy Burnley at Old Trafford. You could see he was putting in a lot of effort and two assists represents good stats. But, as with so many players in the Manchester United red this season, he’s not playing to his potential.

Rooney was poor, Evans tragic. Falcao and RvP have so little connection that they look as if they are from different sports.

And while many of the plaudits will go to Chris Smalling, who got a brace after coming on as a sub early doors, he was all over the shop at times in defence – the bread and butter of his job.

For us, Paddy McNair was comfortably the best Manchester United player on Wednesday evening. He was solid at the back, didn’t waste possession meekly, and got forward with the sort of genuine attacking threat that you hope to see from your wingers.

He will be boosted by his new contract and he played out of his skin against Burnley. This is a footballer who can achieve big things at Manchester United and he fully deserves an extended run in the team if he continues in this form.
