‘He is now in West Ham, I believe’ said Louis van Gaal when asked about the future of Manchester United stalwart Darren Fletcher.
When deals like this happen – as is surely the case with the Scotsman now – it makes you realise quite what seismic changes are going on at Manchester United.
Chicharito and Welbeck were sacrificed in the summer – big players under Sir Alex – and now another fixture of the Fergie era is about it leave.
In truth Fletcher was never the top man at Manchester United. But like players such as Anderson and Nani, he made the squad extremely deep and that allowed United to scoop up trophies left, right and centre.
This nucleus is being dismantled and we just hope that Louis van Gaal sticks around for long enough to put it all back together again.
We still have great faith in the manager, despite his insistence on on 3-5-2, which doesn’t seem to suit the strengths of this squad. But, despite making massive changes at the club over the last 6 months, he still has an almighty job on his hands to return Manchester United to the top.
But United fans will be unanimous in saying well done for the all the great service Darren and good luck at West Ham.
