This one may simply have been a convenient paper-selling back story to the Andre Schurrle speculation. As you may well know the German international has been the subject of substantial hype over the last week about his future at Chelsea – see below for more on that.
But if Schurrle does leave in this window, or indeed Salah goes out on loan, Chelsea may take the plunge on a replacement for their roster of players who can perform in the 3 behind the striker.
If Schurrle has one fault it’s that, unlike Hazard, Willian and even Salah, he doesn’t have the pace of an Olympic sprinter.
And Jose clearly likes speed demons for these roles.
Reports suggest that Chelsea may make a move for one of the very best wingers in Europe right now. The Evening Standard reports:
Chelsea have added Fiorentina winger Juan Cuadrado on to their wishlist if they succeed in offloading Mohamed Salah this month.
A tentative enquiry has been made to Fiorentina about the Colombia international’s situation, who has a £26.8m buy-out clause in his contract.
This guy is special. He’s got pace to burn, is an immense athlete who never stops working his flank, is a genuine goal threat (25 in 84 for Fiorentina), can dribble to devastating effect and has a great delivery. All in all, he looks like the perfect type for Mourinho. We think that he would be an awesome Chelsea buy.
They aren’t exactly desperate right now but if Salah AND Schurrle leave then Jose may look to add one more.
Let’s see Cuadrado in action. Chelsea fans: what’s not to like?
