In truth we have seen this one coming for a while. We always say that there is seldom smoke without fire in the market and rumours of Darren Fletcher leaving Manchester United have been steadily building over the last few days.

First there was the link with Valencia and now West Ham and West Brom are said to be keen on player who only has 6 months left on his contract. Wherever he moves to, it’s reasonably safe to assume that Manchester United have told him that he can leave the club. The Metro reports:

West Ham ‘prepare transfer for Manchester United midfielder Darren Fletcher’

Fletcher is an amazing guy for overcoming a life threatening illness to return to professional football. The debilitating ulcerative colitis condition forced him out of the game for nearly two years and, that he even got close the first team at Manchester United again is a titanic feat. All this occurred at a time when Fletcher was being heralded as one of the best midfield players in Britain.

WAS THIS UNITED’S FIRST BID OF THE WINDOW?

But, in footballing terms, he has looked off the pace this season at Manchester United. It’s obviously due, in part, to a lack of game time. And although Fletcher will be gutted to leave the club, it’s probably a good move for all parties at this stage.

With Fellaini, Herrera, Carrick, Mata, Rooney and Blind all competing for places in the midfield this season Fletcher is unlikely to see much more game time. A move to West Ham could reignite his career.

Let’s see him at his best for Manchester United. West Ham fans: can he improve your midfield?
