For our money Manchester United could do with another central midfielder and a right winger to add to Louis’s squad. So who better than a player who started out as a right winger but plays more centrally these days?
That man is Axel Witsel. The Belgian international, who moved to Zenit St. Petersburg in 2012 for around £30m has suggested, in no uncertain terms, that he may be ready for a move to England. He said:
“I want to play in one of the top clubs in Europe one day,” he said.
“It’s true that I like the Premier League, because it is one of the best league’s in the world, for me, together with Germany and Spain.
“It is a very good league, it is a crazy league. A lot of my colleagues play there, but we will see.
“I am still young, only 26. We’ll see in the future. I have always liked Manchester United from when I was young.”
Having played 56 times for Belgium at the age of just 26 this is a player who has been very highly regarded throughout his career. Marouane’s mate has great pace and a tireless engine. But he also brings attacking speed and prowess to teams. He reminds us a little bit of Chelsea man Willian in terms of his pacey and busy playing style. He’s an adaptable player but that doesn’t mean he just fills in when others are injured. Witsel demands the ball and is central to the play of his club and country.
We think that he would be a really tidy addition to the Manchester United squad and his potential availability should be noted by Louis van Gaal.
