This is Manchester United’s last season with shirt sponsor Nike after the merchandising giant pulled out of a deal to remain as their main client.
From next season onwards Manchester United will be wearing Adidas branded kits and ‘leaked’ pictures, that have been doing the rounds on Twitter over the last 24 hours, suggested that this may well be the new shirt.
There is of course no official word about it, but pictures like this get leaked all the time and tend to be quite accurate.
We like the look of this new Manchester United kit – if indeed this is it – although it does bear many similarities to Bayern München shirts of the past. But that is only natural considering that Adidas is a German manufacturer who also produces the Bayern kit. And the blessing here is that it doesn’t have a silly and pointless collar. Those things should have been laid to rest with the retirement of King Eric – the last man to look cool in one.
Manchester United’s time with Nike has coincided with the most successful period in their history. The last time they had Adidas shirts was near the start of Alex Ferguson’s tenure as Manchester United manager.
Let’s hope, for the sake of Manchester United fans everywhere, that this new deal is a similarly good omen for the club under new manager Louis van Gaal.
