One of Tottenham’s biggest problems this season has been the back line. The boss hasn’t been able to settle on a back five due to injury and form – and the problem doesn’t seem that close to being solved.
We wonder whether news that Winston Reid may be a summer target for Tottenham is something that Spurs fans will want to hear.
Because he’s a decent player and the reported level of interest in him tells you that.
But is he much better than what Tottenham already have? We think he’s strong and mobile but so is Younes Kaboul and we wouldn’t be putting him in any world XI.
What Tottenham need is world class centre back. No expense should be spared to buy one because, if they did sign a really top one, then the rest of the defence would fall into place beautifully.
Ben Davies looks decent at left back and Tottenham have a choice of several right backs in the squad. Walker and Yedlin look the pick of them to us. In the middle, Vertonghen hasn’t been at his best this season. But if a world class leader came in alongside him then the defence, with Lloris at the back, would quickly look watertight again.
But we don’t think Reid is that man. Nevertheless The Mirror reports:
Gunners won’t meet West Ham’s valuation to buy the defender this month but Spurs are understood to be ready to pay £60k a week and £1m signing-on fee.
Let’s have a look at Reid in action. Tottenham fans: is he good enough to solidify the defence or just another player of the level of Chiriches, Fazio and Kabul?

Try telling Ebenezer Levy “that no expense should be spared”; he’ll run a mile.

Well if Arsenal are interested I would steer well clear. Wenger is not the best identifier of talent in that position.
Seriously though on a free I think Reid would be a great addition to the squad. A massive upgrade on Kaboul and Chiriches.

Tottenham’s problems mostly all come from the top in other words Levy, Baldini and the board. It has been going on for years. They don’t really purchase players that the team needs as it’s all about whether they can make money when they sell those players. There is never any real investment in the club from Joe Lewis as money spent always comes from the sale of our best players and you know who they are. I read before the season started that Levy said he wouldn’t get involved in choosing the players we buy he will leave that to the new guy, let’s hope he sticks to that.
As for the transfer window I always looked forward to them as it was an exciting time. Now however for a Spurs fan it’s a pretty miserable time with all the rumors, expectancy and let downs. Then there’s the waiting for Spurs to actually buy someone (the last window being the exception).
Why do Spurs always go for players that seems a good deal or they have potential? Why don’t they buy the finished article? You do the maths. It’s all about saving money and not really wanting the team to go forward. Spurs motto “To dare is to do” is a bit of a laugh really.
