Reports: Manchester United get a major boost with imperious target as he reveals that he has made no official commitment to length of stay

It would be great to see Manchester United sign a really top quality defender in the January winter window. Lord knows they need one. And who better to come to the club and shore up that defence than the brilliant German international Mats Hummels?

The 26-year-old has been an absolute revelation for Borussia Dortmund and Germany over the last couple of years and it really looks like he’s about to show the best form of his career over the next few seasons. Manchester United would clearly like to be the beneficiaries but he isn’t going to come cheap.

However various reports today have stoked up the fires of speculation by quoting the lad saying that he doesn’t know exactly what’s going to happen in the future.

Manchester United receive Mats Hummels boost as defender refuses to rule out Dortmund exit

“I have never said that I will stay here until 2024 or even 2030 and have stayed regardless.”

That’s the headline anyway. But he did go on to stay:

“I prefer to continue on the path to not promise anything, but in the end maybe just do it [stay] than to say that I’ll stay and then just leave.

“There are always clubs knocking on my door, telling me they are interested. But I have always decided that I don’t want to do it.”

We don’t think he’s going to stay at Dortmund for the rest of his career. They are an absolutely fantastic and massive club. But they don’t have the glamour or trophy winning capacity of a Real Madrid, Barcelona or Manchester United and all these teams would surely be keen on taking Hummels to their club.

So we think the door is open for a move and possibly even in January. Manchester United are throwing their money about like never before and if they did get the option to buy this lad we are sure they would take it. Furthermore, recent performances can only have strengthened United’s resolve to invest heavily again.

Let’s see some more highlights from the German. Manchester United fans would this be the best possible January signing?
