Even though it would seemingly fly in the face of Ed Woodward’s assertion that Manchester United won’t go for short term solutions in the January transfer market, it’s easy to see why they might be keen on player like Ron Vlaar.
Having suffered badly in defence this season, with injuries to existing squad members and the departures of the titans in the summer – Manchester United lost Nemanja Vidic, Rio Ferdinand and Ron Vlaar in one fell swoop – Manchester United need to steady the ship at the back. They need a player who will remain composed in times of trouble and keep the shape of the defence good.
Latest reports suggest that Manchester United are intensifying their efforts to sign Aston Villa centre back Ron Vlaar. The Star says:
MANCHESTER UNITED are poised to crank up the pressure to land Aston Villa defender Ron Vlaar.
At 29 Manchester United manager Louis van Gaal knows all about the lad. Vlaar played a key role in Holland’s charge to the semi-final of The World Cup in Brazil in the summer of 2014 and is arguably in the form of his life.
Villa, who seem in a terminal struggle to avoid a relegation scrap, surely wouldn’t want to let him go but you would imagine that the player would be very keen at on a last chance at the big time with Manchester United. With player power at an all time high, Vlaar may get a move if he so desires.
It would represent something of a U-turn from Woodward et al. But Vlaar is still youngish and could end up staying at United for a few years.
Let’s see him in action. Manchester United fans: good enough?
