Manchester United manager Louis van Gaal shouldn’t be messing about too much with transfers at this stage – he has decent numbers in his squad. He now needs to hand pick 3 more stars to complete his squad.
We believe that he needs another top midfielder and Kevin Strootman is the obvious solution. Manchester United also need a right winger to give the team more balance and attacking speed. But, perhaps most importantly, they need a brilliant centre back who can manage the entire defence.
Mats Hummels would be a fantastic player for the club and, at 25, he fits the profile as a player who can give United long term solidity.
But latest reports suggest that Manchester United are drawing up a contingency plan should a move for Hummels fail. The Express reports:
Man Utd chase for Nicolas Otamendi BACK ON as Valencia line up defensive replacement
if competition to sign the German pushes his transfer fee too high, the Old Trafford boss will turn his attention back to Otamendi, who looks set to become available this January
Should the Liga outfit land Brazilian Doria, as expected, they will be open to selling Otamendi, who is currently valued at £40m.
He’s a decent player but £40m seems very steep indeed. At 26 Otamendi has turned out 18 times for Argentina. So he’s not exactly a stalwart of his international side. Furthermore, he moved to the Spanish side for just 12m Euros in February of this year. So quite how the sum of £40m was arrived at is anyone’s guess.
We have seen from the recent imports that this generation of Argentine internationals are superb professionals with great temperament. Otamendi would probably add quality to the Manchester United defence. But, at £40m, we would much sooner go for pass master Mats Hummels.
Let’s see Otamnedi in action. Manchester United fans: vastly overpriced?
