We have seen too many near misses to suggest that any Manchester United signing is inevitable. Wesley Sneijder and Ronaldinho have stung us too severely in the past to ever think that again.

But one of the most likely Manchester United signings over the next couple of windows has to be Kevin Strootman of Roma.

Louis van Gaal has been open and generous in his compliments for the player and, fitness permitting, it seems only a matter of time before a move comes off.

The Telegraph has reported that Strootman remains a major target for Manchester United and that the player wants to come:

Van Gaal and Woodward share a desire for United to possess ‘elite’ players in every position and moves for Strootman or Godín could yet materialise next month.

Roma midfielder Strootman is understood to be determined to be reunited with Van Gaal having become a key figure in the Holland team prior to the cruciate ligament injury sustained in March which forced him to miss the World Cup.

The Dutch international has recently returned to the first team for Roma and may have just enough time to recover his full match fitness and form to persuade United to make a January move. At his best this is a real midfield dominator who can take games by the scruff of the neck and pull teams through games almost single handedly. He’s a great shield for the defence, a super passer of the ball and has 5 goals in 25 league games for Roma to show that he will always contribute at the top end of the park too. Strootman is the sort of complete midfielder that Manchester United haven’t had since Roy Keane was in his pomp.

Let’s take a look at the lad in action. Manchester United fans: the perfect midfield general?
