‘He’s so smooth’ says Legend about Manchester United prodigy

United attack

Special

While we are of the opinion that Manchester United could use a little more experience in their defence, we are big fans of the kids coming through and believe that they need to be given time and space to grow into the first team.

This opinion seems to be shared by Manchester United legend Paul McGrath, who reckons that United have a gem on their hands in Tyler Blackett.

When I see Tyler Blackett, he looks so smooth he could become a real gem but it’s whether they give him the leeway to develop.

McGrath says that there is quality on the market but perhaps no better what the club already has in its ranks.

‘Vincent Kompany is a great leader, Mats Hummels is similar but United aren’t the only ones with money any more. It may be better to nurture Phil Jones, McNair, Blackett and Smalling because they can grow into better than what is in the market.

From the first moment we saw Blackett in preseason he looked special. So strong and composed for one so young. He also has great mobility and passing range. You could make a very strong case for keeping him in the starting line up while he gains vital experience and irons out the deficiencies.

Paddy McNair has also been unbelievable for Manchester United in the short time he has been appearing in the first team. When you consider that he’s not even been brought up as a defender – many at the club reckon he will be a better midfielder – it’s all the more amazing to see how he has coped with his baptism of fire.

Thankfully, Manchester United have a coach who absolutely thrives on bringing though youngsters. McNair and Blackett are in the right place and they have as good a chance of any of making the grade over the next few years.

Manchester United fans: should the club buy a centre back or trust what it has?
