When we saw this one go in the mind was immediately drawn to Wayne Rooney smashing that goal past Arsenal and, in so doing, announcing himself onto the world stage.

Of course it would be foolish to suggest, with one flick of the boot, that Manchester United’s new prodigy can be as good as The Big Man – and indeed he could buckle under the pressure of such references.

Anyway, perhaps it would be more precise to liken the lad to a budding Paul Scholes as his passing and movement are drawing admiring glances from staff and fans alike right now.

But there is a certain swagger in the way that Joe Rothwell plays the game that gives us a sense that this Manchester United youngster may navigate all the hurdles and actually make it to the top.

The way he pinged the ball so effortlessly into the net after a flowing move for United against Blackburn reserves on Tuesday night spoke of a player who isn’t fazed by the big time. He looks like he can’t wait to progress onto an even bigger stage.

Just 19, the Manchester born lad is a really clever midfield schemer already. And he has that bit of magic twinned with an unshakeable inner belief that reminds us of some of the best products from the youth team.

Manchester United’s official site says that, after injury hampered his progress a few years, ago he started:

Rothwell was handed a pro contract in 2013 and the future looks very bright for this young man. Let’s see the goal that everyone is talking about. Manchester United fans: a genuine prospect?
